Designing Tomorrow on the BBC

Designing Tomorrow: America’s World’s Fairs of the 1930s was featured on BBC World and BBC America on December 22. Check out the video, featuring co-curator Laura Schiavo on the BBC’s site. The exhibition title is incorrect on their site – we’ll try to get that fixed! They also put together a nice online slideshow. We hope you enjoy!

My wife and I made a special trip yesterday to the NBM to see your World’s Fairs exhibit, and we enjoyed it greatly. We’ve long been fans of the ’39 New York fair in particular. Too bad time travel wasn’t alongside TV among the innovations previewed — we’d love to go back and see the fairs for ourselves.

Even if the fairs offered corporate-approved visions of the future and of “progress,” at least they represented and reflected an optimism in the country sadly lost today. Thanks again!

Thanks for visiting the exhibition, and for sharing your thoughts here. I often felt, while developing this show, that it would be great to go back and see what the fairs were really like. It’s so hard to capture that multi-sensory experience through photographs, artifacts and videos.
